At Emphoux, the traditional floor tile rules supreme.
Set up in 1844, the company continues to perpetuate the family name and tradition from one generation to the next in its production of the typically Provencal hexagonal tile.
The characteristic shape of these traditional floor tiles is now obtained with the help of machinery armed with cutters to punch out the shapes.
Once this process is finished, the tiles have to be turned over to ensure that they are all perfectly flat. They are placed in dryers, where they are kept for 3 or 4 days before being fired for a minimum of 36 hours in gas ovens. They are then left to cool for a further 24 hours in order to avoid any thermal shocks, before being sorted and packaged.
Five people now work in the Carrelages et Céramiques Emphoux workshop, producing approximately 100 m² of floor tiles per day.
Even if the traditional floor tile has always been and remains the company’s speciality, today’s production includes other product types: trefoils, Moorish designs, and other ancient motifs are coming back into fashion...
Most products are now sold directly to individual customers.
