Terres Cuites des Launes is one of the most traditional manufacturers in Salernes. Everything here is handmade, according to ancestral techniques in order to obtain good quality, resistant tiles made simply from terracotta and without any enamelling.
This was what Jean-Louis Guiol was after in 2001 when he fell in love with the site, and took over the old factory, which has now been restored professionally.
With patience and passion, he learnt, supported and valued the expertise of the 10 craftsman who, from generation to generation, have preserved the authenticity of this factory. The company uses huge wood burning ovens (more than 7m high and 3m wide), whose flames help to obtain inimitable colours and patinas.
The raw clay is extracted from the Guiol family’s own quarries and is left to settle onsite for nearly a year before being washed a number of times in clean water (no additives and filtered through successive sieves). As it was 100 years ago, the clay is cut up into paving stones, individually hand-moulded and, following a natural drying process, taken to the factory for a long period of firing.

However, don’t mistake this scrupulous respect for traditions as being backward-looking. The use of well-proven techniques goes hand in hand with the company’s real effort to create modern and innovative elements, especially in terms of formats.
In the eyes of this company, tiles are not only useful but also decorative objects. This exceptional product available to all offers the possibility of being used in humid rooms such as bathrooms, even without enamelling or resin treatment, contrary to popular belief.
An outdoor product range is also available (thick tiles, full bricks, gutter guard for roof boarding), in order to answer the strong demand.
Finally, a "historical" department has been created, where a selection of traditional tiles have been collected for reproduction on request, in order to give a professional look to your restorations or extensions.
